I recently had the pleasure of meeting Chris and Cameron Yones. They just became the owners of The Flying Shamrock; a family friendly pub/restaurant in downtown Goldsboro that was in danger of closing. I wanted to know more so I sat down to talk with them.
The military brought Chris to Goldsboro in late 2008. The Flying Shamrock was the first pub he visited here and it’s also where he met Cameron. So, when it recently became available Chris jumped on the chance to own it, admitting nostalgia reasons.
The business was established when the Yones’ took ownership, but Chris and Cameron want to rebrand for modernization. They ensure loyal customers they plan to keep the same feel of the place while updating. Two new pro-grade Diamond pool tables have already been added with plans for another soon. They hope to attract pool leagues. Eventually they would like to add a dance floor upstairs, allowing for a relaxed pub feel below and a more energetic vibe up above. The Irish inspired menu will stay the same. ‘The Flying Shamrock’, is the pubs signature reuben sandwich and Chris’ favorite, while Cameron really likes the ‘Grace O’Malley’. But, they add that the whole menu is delicious and you can’t go wrong with any choice.
Be on the lookout for upcoming charity events. They have been a part of The Shamrock’s schedule since it originally opened and the Yones will continue that tradition. Chris and Cameron believe that community matters; Chris told me it’s important for businesses to support each other, so he buys locally every chance he can. Saint Patrick’s Day is March 17th, and it’s the busiest day of the year for The Flying Shamrock. Go check it out in downtown Goldsboro to get a taste of Ireland and support the local community at the same time.
